Slowcraft presents Ascensión por Chimo Pérez, an award-winning independent documentary by filmmaker Joan Gili Prohens showcasing the technique, grit and inspiration of fine artist and fellow Alicante resident Chimo Pérez in an intimate portrait of the creative process. This witnessing of a canvas in creation is complemented by an original James Murray score, composed on tactile and generative electronic instruments in response to the evolving on-screen kinetics.

Direct source recordings of realtime physical interactions with Chimo’s materials are integral to the soundtrack, treated by the composer and processed to produce melodic flourish, resonant percussion and harmonic texturing. Over the unfolding of this visual vigil pencil shading becomes clouds of granular noise, brushes glissando languidly, heavy charcoal impacts and water drops audibly chime. The resulting effect is one of intense immersion in the artist’s deeply personal creative focus, most fully experienced with headphones or via the included 5.1 surround mix.
